Counting down the 50 greatest Hip Hop story rhymes of the Golden and Silver era
Song: Act a Fool
Album: Act a Fool
Year: 1988
Producer: DJ Pooh
“It’s Friday night on the streets of LA, I’m going out been hanging at the house all day”
King Tee decides to get out the house and kick it, typical story affair … shower, Gas up the Cadillac (Arco)
After misplacing his Zapp Tape he finds Knee Deep under his seat (Funk Because Disco Sucks), he’s feeling good, because it’s Friday … he’s not coming back till the morning and he doesn’t have to go to school
*Back when emcees mentioned school as something that existed*
King Tee with $1,000 in his pocket *Not bad for 1988*, and a car phone! He calls up his partner Aladdin who’s been trying to find him … why didn’t he call his phone? Well because back then they only worked when you plugged them in lol
Anyway, Aladdin tells him the party is in Watts (Not the most friendly of neighborhoods) Tee isn’t afraid, he tells Aladdin:
“If you wanna roll just wear neutral colors, if anybody ask you, just tell’em you’re my brother”
On his way to get Aladdin, Tee stops at the store for some Cisco, a 40, and some sort of Nabisco snack … getting ready for the night
His Knee Deep tape started draggin, so he swaps it out for some Dana Dane, Tee picks up Aladdin and tells him they’re not coming back till 6 in the mornin
(Reference to the Ice T classic song), while the two are driving they see Sexy Susan at the bus stop, Aladdin yells at her out the window about her fake hair and she throws a rock at King Tee’s car, so King Tee gets out of the car and drop kicks her LOL
That was him being nice, cuz he could’ve “acted a fool”
They finally arrive at the party both drunk “Couldn’t walk a straight line if you let me crawl”, he sees his boy Mr. Prince smoking a joint, and he takes a hit and then uses mouth spray
(Even drunk he still wanted his breath fresh for the ladies I suppose), a girl was on his jock and was asking him to dance, because he had gold ropes on and he dissed her …
“Cause I feel like a gangster, and I just don’t care
About a girl with fake drag, fake eyes, fake hair
Fake clothes, fake nails and all that fake jewelry
All she wanna do is tell her friends that she screwed me”
That basically ends the story, Tee continues to explain how he doesn’t care when he’s drunk and he’s liable to act a fool at any time, because he’s “cool”
Good use of a Richard Pryor sample at the end too
Classic 1988 West Coast joint
