Top 10 Hip Hop Skits

The Hip Hop Skit seems like they’ve been around on albums forever, but really they popped up in 1989 with De La Soul’s classic 3Feet High and Rising when they gave use the De La Game show
… This was played throughout the album which made it even more innovative, let alone the questions:

How many feathers are on a Purdue chicken?
How many fibers are intertwined in a Shredded Wheat biscuit?
What does ‘touche et al le pu’ mean?
How many times did the Batmobile catch a flat?

LOL and shoutouts to Don Newkirk and Dante the Scrub …

Not to be outdone, De La Soul is dead featured a comic strip and a Grade School “turn the page” beep in the interludes

Unfortunately in the 90s the majority of skits on Hip Hop albums included the emcee receiving oral sex, having sex or smoking weed; I never understood why they thought this would be entertaining to listen to (or picturing … Hi Biggie)

Anyway, I wanted to do a list of my favorite skits from the Golden and Silver era of Hip Hop, so take a read and a listen, if you have favorites or want to comment on your memories or thoughts of these, feel free below or tweet me @TweetRhymesLife

Let’s get to it!

10. The Infamous Prelude

The Infamous (1995)

One of the early skits (If you want to call it a skit) of the 90s that did NOT include sex or drug use … it was a straight message (To we think we know who), it was straight up honest, pissed off P
Punching in the face for living will forever be classic

9. “Woodrow the Base Head”

Supreme Clientele (2000)

People sleep on Woodrow as a skit, mentioned on the “Purple Tape” podcast me and my friends still tell Suzy to throw it out the window … SU!

8. JD’s Gaffilin

AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted (1990)

An early classic, JD tellin all yall what use to happen in the Drive thru … with the most Cali-est of accents you were going to find at the time lol

7. Shark Biters

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… (1995)

The Purple Tape’s skits are legend, this one let us in on a beef we didn’t know existed and featured the only time a hard core rapper ever giggled on wax LOL

6. Ghost and Wallys

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… (1995)

This got everyone hyped to go and dye their Wallys … better yet, it made everyone want to go and get Wallys … Ghost’s enthusiasm over completing his master plan made everyone want to drip their joints like marble cake.

5. Torture

Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

Classic for all the wrong reasons, this is the most gruesome, painful skit of them all … how they tried to outdo each other is only outdone by the sound effects that they provided; everyone can do this one by heart

4. The $20 Sack Pyramid

The Chronic (1992)

A Take on a classic game show (I’ll also say a nod to De La’s classic *Though I know it isn’t lol) The D.O.C’s voice actually makes the skit even funnier

3. Chinese Restaurant

The Score (1996)

The Fugees are not known for their humor, or skits …but this one is so on point … Hard fried chicken, Flying fists of Judah … and who knew that’s what that other part of the wing was called? Hilarious

2. Is he Dead

Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

I don’t even know what else to call this, but it’s classic. It starts off with the Killer tape, but once “Is he dead” is uttered and Ghosts’ reaction!? My personal most quoted skit ever

1. Madd Rapper

Life After Death (1997)

I’m putting this at number one because it was so big, the man came out with his own album (which wasn’t bad at all) and spawned all kinds of phrases “My shit’s more Jon Blaze than that”

Bonus Skits

The Grandfathers of the Hip Hop Skit introduced new joints in their AOI series called “Ghost Weed” … I’d try to explain it but its best if you just listen

… and another, Clyde Smith … STILL hilarious

What did you think?

I hate most of Biggie’s skits. The one where he’s fucking a girl was so annoying and loud I had to turn down the volume whenever I listened to the album. 20 dollar sack is funny as hell. Mad Skillz had a dope skit on his first album, the one where people couldn’t believe he was from VA because he was so nice that he must be from NY.
