I live in the Washington DC metropolitan area (More specifically Northern VA near the Pentagon). Now DC called by most “Chocolate City” known to be a melting pot for different cultures and of course politics it’s also known as the home of GoGo music.
What Is Gogo music?
“Go-go is defined by continuous, complex, heavy rhythm arrangements focused through two motifs performed on multiple congas, tumbadoras, and rototoms, interspersed with timbale and cowbell parts, driven by heavy-footed drumming and punctuated by crowd call-and-response. A swing rhythm is often implied (if not explicitly stated).”
There, for the uninitiated, think Chuck Brown’s Bustin loose and EU’s Da Butt from School Daze.
Now, I was raised on Hip Hop…not rap, hip hop and soul music; so I’m already set in my ways as far as music is concerned and outside of little gogo elements I’ve heard when I was growing up (Chuck Brown, EU and music in Salt-n-Pepa and Kid-n-Play songs)
I’ve always considered GoGo music to sound like a drunk cats fighting in a kitchen with all the bangin’ and bells. And to some extent I still think that
Now recently (and often times to my resistance) I’ve been exposed to GoGo music more and more (You’d think I live here why so late…but hey I still haven’t been on the Metro yet so eff ewe) And you know what I’ve come to find?
I STILL don’t like GoGo music.
…well that’s not all entirely true, what I DO like are they what you might call the Hybrid Go-go and R&B bands that mix a lot of singing and soul into the music and less drunk Catty-ness
The only band that I KNOW for sure that I like is Familiar faces, they do good work (and it helps that the lead singer looks like YEAH!)
Last week I saw a band called ‘what’
Dunno, I’d say because the most popular material that these bands do are covers (thus more popular) and other reason is because very few to no established artist use GoGo elements in their mainstream music.
But what do I know? I’m not a local
