I CAN live without my radio

January 24, 2008

I would HATE to grow up these days…kids have NADA!

Music Sux

Do people listen to lyrics anymore?

Pop music is out of control

Shows don’t play music videos in their entirety anymore…fuk they don’t even start them from the beginning now.

If I were an artist, I’d just make a snippet send it into MTV and BET and pocket the video budget….remember when Michael Jackson’s videos pre empted prime time TV!?
(Probably not)

All the popular singers are interchangeable
men:
Usher
Omarion
Chris Brown
Women:
Ciara
Cassie
Beyonce
Rihanna

You couldn’t do that before:

Michael didn’t sound like Prince, who didn’t sound like Luther, who didn’t sound like hell…Al B Sure…who didn’t sound like Keith Sweat
(R Kelly DID jack Aaron hall’s sound and style though)

Patti didn’t sound like Anita Baker who didn’t sound like Jody Watley…who didn’t sound like Sade
I dunno

These days, Give them all the same song, it’ll sound the same…the music will sound the same, and everyone of them will sell

Why?

Because the buying public (kids) are stupid.

They’re stupid because they don’t know what music is supposed to sound like.

They grew up on Michael’s decline, Prince stopped being sexy…Luther died, and every band broke up.

…they never seen video soul, think Donnie Simpson is just a DJ, don’t know who the Mayor of Rap City or Dr. Dre and Ed lover are.

Shame.

Producers are making music, record labels are getting shout outs…fuk people call CD’s ‘mix tapes’

Songs are about cheating, sex, or flossin.

…now technically there wouldn’t be too much wrong with all that EXCEPT they ALL talk about them the same way

Thriller was about a girl, so was Raspberry Beret…didn’t sound the same now did they?

Videos USE to go with the song or at least had a theme

If the song was about a girl in a restaurant, there would be a girl in a restaurant
If the song was about a Sunny day…it would be a sunny day.

Videos, songs/lyrics would at least go with the songs title

Cassie has a song called Me and U and she’s the only one in the video:|

Though, the originality or thought behind the titles these days…
Snap yo fingers
It’s goin down
Shoulder Lean

I dunno what you’re supposed to do with those…

I’m just sayin’…where are the classics? They don’t make classics anymore. Remember when you were young and your parents would play all their old music and you’d be like UGH! And they said it was the jam back in their day?
Can’t do that now, the parents and the children are listening to the same damn radio stations/same songs and trading CDs.

So….. Years from now, Grandmothers are going to be crankin, Run it by Chris Brown and Chicken Noodle soup?! Ring the alarm? (But then again…Grandmother’s these days are like 28 years old) so maybe.

Funny, I remember when Michael was debuting a new video. We all would crowd around the TV with pretzels, pop and candy and ansty to see what he came up with.

I remember when my mom would have her Bidwhist parties and me and my cousin’t would be in my room like,” OMG.. I wish they cut that crap off.” Now I be in my room jamming to that same “crap” my mom was listening to.

I remember copying moves from New Edition and going out buying tapes by The Boys and ABC. Right On magazines with almost all the guys plastered with scotch tape on my walls.

Nowadays, I don’t listen to the radio and it’s truly sad that I can show my kid brother a pic of Michael (from when he was black) and he has no idea who the hell it is.

My kids are listening to dumb crap like, “Does your chain hang low”, “Chicken noodle soup”. WTF is that all about? What’s up with all of the “finger snap” music… it drives me up the wall! Guess I’m just getting old.

  • http://herstorii.blogspot.com/ Isis

on second note.. I hardly know who the hell Michael is anymore. LOL

I could not tell you the last time I listened to the radio. But get off Beyonce, I know you don’t like her, but you can’t deny she can sing…unlike the others mentioned. Would I buy her music, probably not. But I don’t buy music, unless I hear something that really grabs me.

I agree 100%. Music is not what it used to be. Especially rap music.

All of our rappers had unique styles and personailties.

EPMD was not Tribe Called Quest
Big Daddy Kane was not KRS-One
Doug E. Fresh was not LL Cool J
    Slick Rick was not Rakim
Stetsasonic was not De La Soul
    Latifah was not Lyte

In addition, they were all GOOD. **sigh**

    This is oh so true!
Even though we are all so disgusted with the state
of music- nothing seems to change 🙁

    When will the madness stop!?!?

I can definitely live without my radio… and I do *sigh*

i agree with everything you said. i rarely listen to the radio unless its the ‘quiet storm’ segment on an old-school radio station. i miss luther like he was a relative of mine. thats one voice that could send chills down my spine! i think out of the young singers out, a.keys has the potential to make a classic album, but we’ll have to wait and see if she can.

i may be in the minority, but i don’t think beyonce is that great of a singer. i guess when you compare her to the other commercial artists out now. but vocally, jill scott could sing her under the table in her sleep…esp. live!!! she may have a lot of grammys but nowadays, grammys arent as prestigious as they once were in my opinion.

today’s so-called hip hop makes me cringe. i’d rather pop in my old tapes (yes, tapes) of earlier hip hop then listen to any of these “grill-wearing, finger-snapping, leanin-rockin wit it, chicken noodle-soup dancing” clowns that bombard the radio waves.

love your blog by the way. i’ll be bookmarking it for sure.

  • StephStarr

I feel the same way about music because I can not get into some of the stuff my little nieces are into. I just can’t….LOL. I find myself listening to stuff I grew up on or looking outside of the states to find something different.

Music does suck nowadays..I very rarely now watch music videos or listen to the radio. I’m content with my shuffle and my songs on the computer. I think I may have a few songs from this year the rest are before 2000

  • http://lovesjanuari.blogspot.com januari

so true, so true…its crazy how we are surrounded by dumb artist and dumb people who buy their music.

  • http://jcdplace2be.blogspot.com/ Julia_Claudine_Deveraux

It’s a shame what music has been reduced to. I divorced radio back in 1994 and I have been happy ever since. Unfortunately I have to hear bullshit in the beauty shop, the gym, at home because of my teenager, and in the clubs when I go out with friends. When I choose a club, I go to clubs that cater to underground music lovers. There is good music out there, the bad part about it is great artists are not getting their shine. Mediocrity sells. Beyonce is the best example of a great singer for young folks???? GTFOH! Such a shame! I buy and support independent and underappreciated artists….I NEVER bootleg them. I too remember when Michael’s video releases were an EVENT….you made sure you were home so you could watch them.

Ok…I’m def feeling the pictures on the page…..second I am soo tired of videos that don’t go with the song…I mean if we gonna talk about how I should have cheated shouldn’t I cheat LOL…I mean is Mary J the only person that understands the concept of having a story line….and why is everyone so amped on dancing and shoulder leaning and booty dropping..anywho I could go on and on….I will def be back…I’m feeling the music mix as well 🙂

  • http://Shugaorspice.blogspot.com Shug

I so feel you on this one. Good point about Cassie though. LMAO!!!! The last new song to come out that I heard and was seriously like “WOW…this is gonna be a classic” was You Don’t Know My Name by Alicia Keys. Such a great song. It was new but it had that old school vibe which is why it was so hot. Yeah, music AND TV sucks these days.

I’m laughing hysterically over here @
Cassie has a song called Me and U and she’s the only one in the video
    and
Grandmothers are going to be crankin, Run it by Chris Brown and Chicken Noodle soup?! Ring the alarm? (But then again…Grandmother’s these days are like 28 years old) so maybe.
That is some funny stuff! Great post!

Luther is realm of his own!

This post was serious… music today is out of control. Anytime my 4 year old niece is catching on to songs with lyrics like,

“Meet me at the mall… it’s going down” and

“eenie, meenie, miney, mo, how many players in the club wanna go” or whatever it is, I told my husband the other day, that they are making these songs sound like nursery rhymes, that’s why these children are running with ’em.

    Shameful.

Hahaha, I liked this. Very fun to read. I have thought about that-being some old lady at some old folks home listening to “Gin & Juice” and stuff. Hahaa, 28 years old…so true…but anyway, I really like your blog. Love the music, the visuals are AWESOME and your writings put a smile on my face.
    Good job.

Preach man preach! lol I feel it. The only albums I buy anymore are artists I’ve been listening to for years and even those are getting less promising. We are too caught up in the hype of the industry and image. For example, a lot of songs are made and then passed from artist to artist until someone grabs it. Songs aren’t personalized any more.

The fckd up part is I’ve started busting out all my old school music. I don’t listen to the radio or watch TV. I got that Luther and Mary J on spin in my player. I said it before, Superman can’t save us from Soulja Boy…

  • harriet

    Doggone shame…but it’s so true.

I don’t even bother anymore. I just keep my gospel, jazz and dusties on spin.

    and he speaks the truth

  • http://myfuturerocks.blogspot.com a.tiara

lol this list is hilarious and true at the same time. I’ve had numerous discussions with my friends about the state of hip hop and the music industry in general. With all these Flo-rida’s and soulja boys coming out I really dont know what to make of it. For now my radio has been replaced by my mp3.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

It’s funny how kids have everything, yet in reality, you are right; they have nothing. There is no substance. Had me rolling with the don’t even play the entire music videos anymore.

True, anything pretty much sells now. Well except Joe Budden.

Videos USE to go with the song or at least had a theme

    Yep.

Can’t do that now, the parents and the children are listening to the same damn radio stations/same songs and trading CDs.

Dude, you have my stomach hurting!

Sidebar: Thanks for the link. Props.

  • cuzkaysaidso

What you’re describing is the natural course of things. Believe it or not, there are classics in every generation….they can only be seen through hindsight. Thriller was pop ALL OVER the radio before it was “a classic” As long as new music comes from new generations, they will be downtrodden by older folks so let the kids have their fun. Play your tapes and CDs just like your parents played their vinyls. Radio is for pop music and pop music is for the kids. I guess we’re getting old!

  • http://www.thegoddess.blog-city.com The Goddess

You hit in on the nail!!! People have NO clue what good music is these days. They never HEARD of

    Marvin Gaye
    Lenny Willaims
    Bill Withers
    Switch
    Soul II Soul

It’s like you mention them and kids are like “Huh, WHO???” Music was SO hot in the 70’s and 80’s. And LMAO at you talking about grandma’s being 28. It’s funny be cause my 2 best friends recently became grandma’s at 36 and 37. That’s just Wayyyyy too young to be called Nana. lol

  • http://turquoisesha.blogspot.com Mel

This is the whole reason I hardly turn the radio on. It’s iPod, CD, or the classical station. That’s it.

  • http://mentallyspeaking.blogspot.com BluJewel

That’s why I love my iPod. I RARELY have the radio on in my car. I’d rather listen to silence if I’ve forgotten my iPod than put the radio on. What is that mess they’re playing anyway?

  • http://mysTery2you.blogspot.com mysTery

‘Shows don’t play music videos in their entirety anymore…fuk they don’t even start them from the beginning now.’ 4REAL!!!!!!! That is SICK!

    ‘Women:
    Ciara
    Cassie
    Beyonce
Rihanna’ Interchangable…..come on now E!! I’m not in love with Beyonce or nothin…but she would KILL those other chicks on the vocals!!

Lol, but I understand what you are saying though….music is on the decline.
