The REAL reason Hip Hop is dead

Okay, you want me to tell you?…promise not to tell anyone else, this is just between me and you okay?

k.

Well.

The REAL reason Hip Hop is dead is real simple.
Remember when “The Golden age” of Hip Hop was pumpin? The 80’s…in to the 90’s? The reason why it was hot and people got a long and the music was so relatable and different was because
We were ALL the same age!

That’s it….the audience and the speaker.

Back in the day they rhymed about Sneakers, School, Girls, Pickin boogers, catchin the bus, hangin outside
It was all shit we could do…it was what we were doing at the time.

My Adidas- run DMC
“There’s no Shoestrings in em, I did not win em, I bought them off the Ave with the black Lee Denim”

Indeed, well, lemme go down there and cop me some too!

Sucker MC’s
“I’m D.M.C. in the place to be, I go to St. John’s University
And since kindergarten I acquired the knowledge, and after 12th grade I went straight to college
I’m light skinned, I live in Queens, and I love eatin chicken and collard greens”

Indeed, I’m in school, Im going to go to college…mamma just made some chicken!

…when’s the last time a “rapper” said anything about College…not only postive…. but at all?

BIG: “Fuck the state Penn got hoes in Penn State”
(Albeit GREAT fukin line)…but you get my point.

The thing is we grew up with the Rappers they were only a few years older than us and had about the same money
…they did the same ish we did every day, and the music reflected it. ONLY difference… they had a record deal

NOW

Rappers do their best to overdo and outdo anything and everyone
The cars have to be bigger, better, faster, more exclusive.

Back then (since we were all the same generation) they were happy to HAVE a car and rhymed about it
…shidd look:
Sir Mix-A-Lot: My Hooptie
Ice Cube: “I’ll tell a girl in a minute…I drive a bucket, and won’t think nothing of it, she can ride or walk, either leave it or love it”

NOW

Rappers poppin Cham, braggin about the high price drinks and clubbin

THEN

A 40 ounce…get it at any store.
St. Ides? Those were the greatest commercials EVER

You got 30-40 year olds making music for Teenagers…that shit don’t mix
That’s why the music sux, they have to dumb down the music to sell
If anything speak intelligently to make these (you) dumb fuckers think and figure out what they saying (You must learn)

…That’s like Marvin Gaye or Luther making Kid songs…singing Candy Rain and Dial My Heart…fuk no they did them…you were either with it or not

I mean LL came out when he was 17…he’s still making music to the same age group people.

Think about New Edition:
Count me out
Cool it now
NE Heart Break
Boys to men
They sang about what they were doing at the time…and different ish and situations
How they have 10 Albums and aint talk about fukin nobody not once?

Not a one

Luther the KING of the love songs…aint fuk nare one woman in a song

NOW

You got 15-16 year old singers making songs pumpin and humpin…shirts off
Then we wonder why we have 30 something year old grandmothers. (With Snoopy Ears)

Hip Hop music is dead because of cash and the audience

It’s not all on the artist, it’s the consumer…we (myself included) dont buy a lot of the new releases (shiddd I dont even download them)
Because the music is garbage

The artists dont make good music because the people they’d make it for wouldn’t buy it (they think)
…we prolly would

BUT

The Record execs dont wanna take that gamble…so if you wanna make some loot, make some shit.

That’s why there are no big concerts anymore

You use to go see: Keith Sweat, Al B Sure, New Edition, Whodini and Run DMC at one show
…and LL would open or some ish.

Now anything worth anything they are doing local clubs or lounges for tours…

Hip Hop music is dead because our youth are embracing ignorance and the older people making music are enforcing it

I cannot hate anyone trying to eat and ‘make their money’
Times are changing; Rapping was NEVER about making money FIRST!
Money was a cool by product that doing the same ish you did for fun and on the corner that came when people caught on
It was about fun, impressing others, and expression.

Don’t gimme that bullshit about these guys are just reflecting what they see and go through everyday
These fukfaces dont see all that violence everyday…and they damn sure not in the drug game that deep or none of that
Murders dont think of words to rhyme…that’s evidence son!

You USE to be able to blow up by coming out being different…

NWA was poppin….De LA comes out…LL was poppin…Kwame comes out

Then at some point the bullies came out…if you were different you got dissed and ridiculed and everyone came out and had  to sound like who ever was hot.

You realize how SUCKY Hip Hop would’ve been if everyone had to sound the same and rhyme about the same shit?

Like Public Enemy comes out and if you dont sound like Chuck D and talk about uplifting Blacks and shutting down corporations you dont sale?

No Fresh prince, no Slick Rick, no Kool G Rap, no Big Daddy Kane…no Tone Loc Puahahahaha

Cuz that’s where we are, if you dont sound like Jay Z or TI …and dont rhyme about the same ish and shidd use the same words and slang
Youre not moving units….simple.
DAMN people even doing the wack Jay Z whisper thing he does…its cool when HE does it.

Clearly when the subject is “Hip Hop music” I could go on forever…shame that Hip Hop heads dont really hit the net I’d have people to commiserate with lol
…there’s a few on the Board.

So, until Children become more concerned with learning and evolving and record companies tire of signing the same acts and images
Hip Hop music will continue to die a slow death

Long Live Hip Pop

Hip Hop music is dead because of cash and the audience

That’s what I’m sayin…I remember back when it wasn’t cool to be a sellout.

  • http://jessicasong.net jess

never thought about it that way… well shit

  • IknowYouGotSoul

I see what you’re saying. I never thought about it like that, but I still don’t think Hip Hop will be saved.

  • http://blackgirladventures.blogsot.com Alisha

I must say Hip Hop is super wack these days! I don’t even like listening to the radio unless I’m going out and need to hear something to pep me up.

St. Ides: Remember the commercials? And the spin-off with the cartoon with Snoop in it?
“St. Ides: Anything other is preeminent!” lol
All songs talk about anymore is sex. Are there even any slow songs out? Sheesh!

  • Arianna

Down south rap had alot to do with hiphop being dead…liljon, lilwayne, lilscrappy etc…they all dug a hole and threw hiphop init. Damn BET.

  • http://eclectik-relaxation.com/ eclectik

That and I still blame NWA

  • akilah

Well, I am such a fiend for hip hop that I remember the Skinny boys….lol

I cannot get off of this topic because it is so dear to me. I grew up on real hip hop and today’s artists simply are not into intellectual wordsmithing.

I just listened to Big Gip from Goodie Mob discussing the state of hip hop today and he is one of the reasons why hip hop will not die. He put it like this, the artists of the today are the crack babies of the 80’s who really don’t have a good point of reference, with 30 year old grandmother’s….lol…..and they aren’t into reading/learning/evolving and discussing relevant and ish…..and they would rather die with more money than respect…..

  • http://eclectik-relaxation.com/ eclectik

Alls I know is ur my new favorite reader…i own the skinny boy joints…listened yesterday

  • bayoubeauti

GREAT POST E! Never thought about the age difference thing and you are right on. I tried to explain to my 14 yr old cousin about why that jibbs (or whatever his name is) about the chain hanging low is wack…its like trying to teach a dog how to talk.

  • akilah

ha…I knew that Skinny boy reference would let you know how serious I am about this……..well thanks for letting me be apart of the “E” fam…i’ll be sure to comment more often because your blog is that fiyahh….

  • http://www.renaissanceblackwoman.blogspot.com Eb

    Chuuuurcchh!!

  • http://myfuturerocks.blogspot.com a.tiara

I couldn’t agree with you more!

“Murders dont think of words to rhyme…that’s evidence son!”

lol I’m still laughing at that line.

  • http://www.monieinthemiddle.blogspot.com Monie

    Booooooooooooo…my comments didn’t go through.

I had some Lost questions and everything. Dah well…

    Boo, dammit. LOL

  • http://www.monieinthemiddle.blogspot.com Monie

Dude…my comments are SO not going through. *sigh* LOL

  • Ariel

    Baaaaaallllllliiiiiinnn!

Lolol, j/k. I think that’s probably the best argument that I’ve heard for Hip Hop being dead.

  • heavenleigh

“Luther the KING of the love songs…aint fuk nare one woman in a song”

    Or in real life.
Okay, that was wrong. I’ll go sit in the corner.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

    You aint never lied, e.

Back then everyone was the same age…so the music made more sense because they were either talking about stuff that we could relate to, or was about to be able to relate to. That is the God honest truth.

Now, all we are being bombarded with is…bull ish on top of bull ish. No balance. No nothing. Just a flood of str8 garbage.

Some songs are decent, but nowhere near the Golden Age of the music.

I also agree, we, the consumer, can stop it.

  • http://mentallyspeaking.blogspot.com blujewel

Everything you said, I second it.

We had REAL music coming up, what we hear these days is shit!

  • http://www.karrieb.blogspot.com Karrie B.

preach on E…i feel you on the “Hip Hop music is dead because our youth are embracing ignorance and the older people making music are enforcing it”
music today is without substance…it’s so sad. the young one’s will never get the chance to really fall in love with hip-hop like i did when i was younger. sucks for them.

Great post, Homie, but I still subscribe to the fact that Hip Hop isn’t dead. Especially as long as there are those who rep it to the fullest. Your kwelis, your Mos Defs, your KRS Ones, your Dooms, your Commons, your PEs, your De Las, yourself, etc. As long as one stands up, the art is still there.

Now Rap as it is now, on the other hand, is dead and stinkin’! Outside of that.

Remember when De La felt they had to dumb down their style because people were asking, “What are they saying”? They STILL ripped it an people still didn’t get it. That’s when I started weeping for the masses.

Or how about when everybody rhymin’ about killin’, but nobody went to jail. Ok, Slick Rick, but he didn’t talk about it.

Like Public Enemy comes out and if you don’t sound like Chuck D and talk about uplifting Blacks and shutting down corporations you dont sale?
    – I’ve always thought this was a shame. PE is still on of my fav groups.

Wheeen we rock the house, there is no doubt(is no doubt)….

  • http://newnegrogroove.blogspot.com maddypappy1

Damn, E!!! Good shit!! What’s ironic is I was sitting here listening to Hip Hop is Dead when I hit up ya spot. How’s that for ESP. I think we on the same wavelength bro, even though you are like eleventy million years older than me. lol

One of them swisherhouse cats said, Fuck college!/ Stret knowledge helped me get my cake early. Does that count? It was garbage, but ti did have that reference. haha

I think I’ll be done wirth this stuff in feive, ten years tops. I hope not. But as it is now, I only listen to five or six contemporary hip hop artists. Lupe/Kanye/Common/Little bother/Nas/Jay. Maybe a few others, but that’s about ti.

Time to start picking up jazz, methinks

  • Princess0889

I love this post. I maybe be young but my brother taught me early what is good and real. I have notice my cd collect basically becomes distant after 1998. I have become a avid byer of old school R&B now because I have given up on rap.

    PREACH!!!

    So true…and very well written.

    AWESOME post!!!

  • http://rawdawgb.blogspot.com rawdawgbuffalor

i miss back in the day

  • Nat Turner II

You know where I stand on this subject…When the best artist don’t sell and Lil Wayne is actually able to say he is the best rapper alive and have record sales to back it up, and is actually getting that shit off…that is sad. I mean even the artist that were negative when we were younger actually had talent. I don’t blame NWA…I blame Master P and No Limit…he was the first to make all these drug dealers want to be rappers. I don’t think hip hop is dead…it’s just in remission…as EPMD put RAP is outta control.

  • http://2buppiechicks.blogspot.com/ brightstarr

This is the best explanation I’ve read in a while. My question is will hip hop ever return to it’s roots?

  • http://www.shesoflyy.blogspot.com muze

    great post, e.

    very well written too.

    and i agree!
