Pause Mix

February 24, 2008

I used to love Radio more than TV
(imagine that)

But, when I was younger I’d get up get something to eat grab my radio and hit the stoop
Sit there and play my radio all damn day
Pause-Mix tapes
Ish off the radio (Remember when you’d record songs off the radio, and be BURNT when the DJ talked over it?)
The latest jumpoffs that I recorded off my Albums

…Damn we’d go buy an album THEN have to record it onto cassette to listen elsewhere
(You weren’t going to take the album around…couldnt play albums in the car)

Anywhoo…

Use to sit outside and rock son! Had the Radio…drew grafitti all over it (no stickers though, that was wack)

That’s prolly why I know 98% of every hip hop song (that was worth anything) from 1980 to 1995

That was a great 15 years.

Damn Music is wack now…

When did it become acceptable for “R&B” and “Pop” singers to SING the word “Nigga” and curse?
R Kelly…T Pain…J Holiday…etc.

What the hell is that?

And YOU people listen and buy that ish.

Seriously how you gon SING “Curses” and “Niggas”?

Is that ish sexy? Least when NWA did it they were joking/playing around…ish was a parody

THESE dum fuks is serious!

And women are shakin they ass and smilin off it.

People are stupid.

I use to always say how do you take a woman serious when you’re supposed to look at her and treat her some kind of way
then at the club she walked around singin “put it in my mouth” word for word lol

I dunno

People can like whatever they like, just because I think it’s crap is my own issue.

It’s different though….

When I was little my parents use to listen to their stuff and I thought…meh it’s okay
Wasn’t The Fat Boys, Run DMC, EPMD, or even New Edition for that matter

But it was cool

And the artists that were NOT hip Hop that came out everyone liked

Whitney, Anita, Luther, Bobby Brown, etc etc. they all came out when WE were coming up…not our Parents
and EVERYONE liked them (well I never liked Whtiney, but meh.)

I dunno where Im going with this, I’m just sayin…the shelf life for artist isn’t what it use to be

Remember when Janet came out? Control was bangin

Can you picture a 30-40 year old Rihanna still singin? NeYo is he going to be making music 10 years from now?
Will we be coppin a T Pain greatest hits Disc?

Fuk no.

I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to music 2018 it might not even be music anymore.

Peace to the Purple Tape

If Ne-yo’s writing evolves as he gets older, he just might have longevity. I used to listen to “white folks” music back in the day…yeah, I admit it. But I loved me some Whitney, Luther, Anita, and Prince! Michael Jackson was the bomb too. I could not tell you the last time I bought a cd. You’re right, music now-a-days is anything but.

E, I love this post!!! I live, breath, and sleep music. It’s sad, at this point now, I don’t even listen to the radio anymore. Most of it is a bunch of crap and not even relevant anymore. Remember the days when you could listen to a 45 or a good cassette tape on the floor in your room and could “get” and understand the lyrics and decipher it’s meaning? It seems the older I get, the more love and respect I have for my 80’s and early 90’s music. Monk, Parker, Gillespie, and Davis would roll over in their graves if they knew what the music of today has become.

Like I said before, music is my sixth sense and in some ways my addiction, but when I hear some of the music that’s out now…………makes me wanna go to rehab!

-And I thought I was the only one who knew about Pause tapes. Probably still have one or two of them. Yea, man, just when you think you had the pristine recording of [insert song here], the damn DJ would roll all over it. The back of the room calls it copy protection. 🙂 What’s funny is that now you can’t pay the DJ’s to say the name of the song you want to know the name off. It’s either the first or last song in the set and it’s the one you already know because it’s been played 1000 times in the last hour. Bunk, I tell you, Bunk!

When did it become acceptable for “R&B” and “Pop” singers to SING the word “Nigga” and curse?
    – I blame Chante Moore… kidding (maybe)

As much as I love music, I had to turn my back on the radio (Remember when there was variety and actual artist?) and the general music scene.Hope still lies in the underground, though, so I’ve not totally abandoned it.

“I used to sell. Mixtapes. But now I’m an emceeeee(not really).
I got the rhymes and beats, I used to rock them tapes(tapes tapes)”

  • http://www.thenewgee.blogspot.com/ gee unit

man those were the days..great post, brought back a lot of memories..we recorded everything off the radio especially new years eve..we’d record all the top songs of the year, write down all the lyrics and keep it like forever!.

    ^^^ So true.

I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to music 2018 it might not even be music anymore.

^^^ I’m pretty sure the folks your age aroung 20 years ago were saying the same thing. Guess what the music you listened to back in the day and the current music have in common????

I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to music 2018 it might not even be music anymore.

    yeah, kinda sucks

  • marinate

I use to LOVE Whitney…..knew all of her songs and everything….now I am disappointed in her….does that mean I shouldn’t like her music

Ummmm, i don’t buy CD’s….folks have bought them for me, but me going to Target and Best Buy or Circuit City when the “new cd” comes out….nah, not the kid. I like the old school music alot more. I won’t fake like I don’t listen to some of the new stuff but right now, at work, I am listening to 96.3, I get some new stuff but, I like my oldies….I guess we can call it old school since its the 80’s we are talking about…..oh, I am getting old, nah, just getting better, lol.

  • curvydva

Ish off the radio (Remember when you’d record songs off the radio, and be BURNT when the DJ talked over it?)
-Man!! You aint NEVA lied!! I was recording a song off the radio in my car on my phone the other day (cheapests ringtone you will ever find lol) and the DJ cut in lol. I thought I was 12 again lol.

When did it become acceptable for “R&B” and “Pop” singers to SING the word “Nigga” and curse?
    R Kelly…T Pain…etc.
-Yeah this one is always puzzling to me. Sensitive thugs? Is that was that’s supposed to be? I’m lost.

I use to always say how do you take a woman serious when you’re supposed to look at her and treat her some kind of way
then at the club she walked around singin “put it in my mouth” word for word lol
-Ha!! That was me and it would probably still be if I still went to clubs and they still played that song lol. It was the ONLY time I’d sing it. Oh well maybe when i was in the car and it was playing kinda low becuase God forbid anyone hear me sing it while driving down the street. I just liked that song lol. Always thought it was funny.

Can you picture a 30-40 year old Rihanna still singin? NeYo is he going to be making music 10 years from now?
-RiRi no, but Ne-Yo yes. He writes good music. His singing I’m a lil skeptical about. 10 years from now, I can say probably 20 I’m not so sure about.

    Damn Music is wack now”
I mostly turn on the radio to listen to talk radio like NPR. What’s coming out now I don’t even consider music. It has to change though. I think this crap will sink to such a low level that people won’t be able to take it anymore and they will scream out. Hopefully it will be in our lifetime. The masses move slowly

Seriously how you gon SING “Curses” and “Niggas”?”
I don’t buy music with that in it, it hurts my ears

Music will always be around because it is an expression of our souls. I’m urging people I know to reform the industry & bring the music back. It will change, it’s just a matter of when

Every generation has had a problem with music at one point or another. It’ll never be like what we loved, what our parents loved, and what our grandparents loved. I agree with whaty you say, but maybe it’s because I grew up with the same music you did. The radio sucks these days, that’s for damn sure. But I still find some music I dig even if my ipod is filled with 80’s and 90’s music. I’ve also turned to alternative ways of finding new music outside of mtv and the radio. Podcasts and word of mouth are where I get new music these days.

    Once again its on…

*turning TV off and pumping the volume on the computer speakers*

I used to love the radio more than TV as well. Now I love my computer more than both of ’em.

Remember when you’d record songs off the radio, and be BURNT when the DJ talked over it?)

LOL. Yep. I remember when all I wanted were the clear see-through cassesttes. Used to think those johnt were the freshest.

NE was the bomb group. We watched these dudes grow up as we grew up. We don’t have that anymore with todays’ artist.

Loved when Janet Jackson got with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis; it was a wrap.

I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to music 2018 it might not even be music anymore.

    hahahahahahahahaha

Dude, the Hip Hop rotation is deadly.

    Eric B is President
    I Know You Got Soul
    Five Minutes of Funk
    My Name is D Nice
    Doug E Fresh
    Dana Dane
    EPMD
    Special Ed

    …deadly.

  • http://singlebubblepop.blogspot.com Niki

First off, I love your blog!

I completely agree! The music industry has completely devalued the idea of being an ARTIST and placed all the emphasis on the superficial. I was so disgusted last year when J. Holiday came out with that Bed “song”–>it makes my skin crawl!

I teach piano lessons and I asked two of my students (both 7 year old white girls) what their favorite kind of music was. I was surprised to hear both of them respond with “HIP HOP”as their favorite genre. When I asked who their favorite hip hop artist was, one named Chris Brown, and the other FERGIE. Sad! This is what Hip Hop has become to the masses.

I too let go of the radio years ago, and even now, I look back on the things I did listen too 5 or 6 years ago and wonder, what was I thinking??? Thank God for myspace, blogs, youtube etcor we would probably never get access to genuine ARTISTs anymore!

my fav blog entry and rotation of all time!!!

” Now the party didnt start till I walked in
And I probably wont leave until the thing ends “

  • harriet

man…worth thinking about. but you do have the artists that are trying to make a change. i hope it works, otherwise i’m staying underground.
