B – Girl Stance : Deadly Venoms

March 10, 2011

We all know that I love and adore women … and I love Hip Hop …so of course I love female emcees so allow me to wax randomly about them…

Roxanne Shante is my favorite femcee of all time … part of the reason I love Hip Hop so much, she killed it with Roxanne’s revenge the voice; The battles
And she sparked the single greatest answer/battle string of recordings in the history of song … Wiki Roxanne Wars

For whatever reason Female lyricists started to become only popular if/when brought out by a male emcee:

Lil Kim (B.I.G)
Foxy Brown (LL – Jay-Z – Nas)
Rah Digga (Busta)
Eve (DMX)
Da Brat (JD)
Nicki Minaj (Wayne)
Charlie Baltimore (Cam’ron)
Rage (Snoop)
Free (Canibus)

…never use to be like that; Shante, Lyte, Latifah, Monie, Sweet Tee just came out and dropped like what?

Femcees use to go WAY harder back in the 80s
Women that rhymed might not have gotten the same pay or shows as the males back in the day BUT they were respected by the males (esp the male fans) as being peers and on the same level as the male emcees

They battled the guys … did Answer Records

UTFO made Roxanne Roxanne … Shante came with Roxanne’s Revenge
Doug E. Fresh made The Show … Super Nature came with “The Showstoppa”
LL made Dear Yvette … then E-vette Money came out with Dear LL
The Boogie Boys made “Fly Girl” Pebbly Poo made “Fly Guy”

I remember the first time I heard “The Showstoppa” by Super Nature I was like WOW!

Salt n Pepa’s “Hot Cool and Vicious” was one of the greatest Hip Hop releases by male OR female … it was SOLID (not the remastered crap with Push it on it … the original)

What happened to female rap groups?
You had:
JJ Fad:
…Who did NOT have a crush on Baby D?
Salt N Pepa:
…The original Spin was a fool to leave
The Cookie Crew:
…I remember their video rocked the ill Triple FAT Goose coats
Body and Soul:
…Shout outs to Dee and Pump it up
Wee Papa Girls:
…England femcees were featured on the Skinny boys 2nd joint
Sylk tymes Leather:
…The West coast SnP
Oaktown’s 357:
…The Original group had that banger!
BWP and HWA:
…Bitches with Problems and Hoes with Attitudes lol -Hey Rick James’ daughter was in HWA)
L’Trimm:
…Tigra and Bunny … mannn listen

#trueconfession I use to LOVE L’Trimm (I bought BOTH of their albums) and Lady T is still making music
… And looking damn good whilst doing so

Do you realize how BIG Deadly Venoms could’ve been? What a concept! Someone should bring that back

Eve has always been awful to me … physically and lyrically …and as an actress lol

Sha Rock caught wreck back in the day … her verse on “Rappin and Rockin the House” is a beast

In some respects I think lyte is overrated though … her first 2 Tapes were bangers but that was really it. That Roughneck mess and that pop mess was the awful

All underrated Femcee first team

Charli Baltimore
Bahamadia
Rah Digga
Lady Luck
Lin Que
Shorty No Mas

Love Shorty no Mas

Lady Luck is a cutie too

You know who gets NO love as one of the “Godmothers of Hip Hop”? Angie Stone
… She rocked it out in 1979! With Funk you up … when she came out singing people thought she was new; I was like MANNN She use to be on Sugar Hill!

She is NOT the youngest woman lol

Greatest femcees of all-time Top 5

1. Roxanne Shante
2. MC Lyte
3. Sha Rock
4. Jean Grae
5. Foxy Brown
…not counting Lauryn Hill till she makes a Rap album
I put Foxy Brown because Ill Na na and Broken Silence are better than everyone else’s albums

That’s it … I got more in the chamber though; I love women so more to come ’till then…

“I’m Calm with my business yet I do things on the double, you I’m out like Buster Douglass, I say Peace to MC Trouble … Rest in Peace”

Good post! The female MCs of hip hop MUST be recognized.

And as usual…we differ on our top 5.

Aint NOBODY betta than MC Lyte! LoL

I can agree with almost everything here. I love Eve’s flow. It’s undeniable. and I’mma have to agree with Father Tyme up there, MC Lyte is the G.O.A.T. of femcees. Lin Que has always been underated, even when she was Isis in the X Clan.

Man…Lady Luck though!! Deadly Venoms was a great concept…but I could definitely see them not going far at all. Femcee groups are soooo few and far in between, and its sad really.

aite e, gotta hand it to you. This is one of the illest write ups I’ve seen and with your permission, I’d like to post it up on one of my sites, directing them to this post of course to read more. A few names I’m shocked I didn’t see you mention with underrated: Medusa, Da Brat, and Bahamadia. I can’t disagree with anything you posted though, dope ass write up!

  • saule wright

my bad, I missed bahamadia up there. Play on playa.

  • lovnlife

    Ooooh..are we posting regularly, E!?!?!
    Let me catch up.

    My Top 5:
    1. Lauryn Hill based on her work with the Fugees, her solo album and her cameo appearances. I think she is the dopest. *shrugs*
    2. MC Lyte
    3. Jean Grae
    4.Rah Digga
    5. Bahamadia

Also, I’d argue that even in your Beloved 80’s you still needed that male enforcement to get in the door.
I mean Audio Two wrote a lot of MC Lyte’s material, no?

And as you said, Roxanne Shante as awesome as she is did an answer record to a male group. Salt n Pepa did an answer to Showstopper by Dougie Fresh and they didn’t write their early material. It was written by Salt’s then beau, Herby.

Queen Latifah was the Princess of Flavor Unit and wasn’t Monie Love had the backing of Native Tongues…

All awesome talents but had a male influence.

Hmmmm…I think female emcees have always needed that male influence in order to be successful. But I get your point. Great post, E!!! šŸ™‚

*looks around to see if it’s okay to comment* 😐

    Hi. Very dope post.
So many memories. Thought I was going to be a femcee due to some of these ladies. Of course, fam was quick to shoot down that dream.

No mention of Finesse & Synquis??

  • http://www.lyric2go.com C-Recks

Man totally agree about Foxy’s 2 albums ILL NaNa and Broken Silence, both certified bangers.

Deadly Venomz was a dope concept. Too bad they didn’t get the shine they should have could’ve been epic.

Man 1 under rated femcee I don’t see mentioned on either post is Bahamadia. She was put out by Premier/Gangstarr, and she had flow. She just needed to speak up. SHe was so monotone.
